Learn 2 Fish With Us Is Part of US Forest Service Kids Fishing Day During Wisconsin’s Free Fishing Weekend

Learn 2 Fish With Us volunteers Captain Greg  and Karen Karch  helped during the 23rd Annual Kids Fishing Day, which was hosted by the United States Forest Service.  Kids Fishing Day took place on Saturday, June 3rd at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center located in Ashland, Wisconsin.  Nearly two hundred youth attended the event which was held during Wisconsin’s Free Fishing Weekend.  Families registered for a time slot and then experienced the many fishing stations which included, casting, how to hold a fish, knot tying, Aquatic Invasive Species, keeping the lead out, parts of a fish, fish identification, safety while fishing and so much more.  Once the youth attended all the educational stations they went fishing in a stocked pond where many fish were caught.

The youth received many goodies in their bag which included hooks, hat, shirt, fishing educational book and other goodies.  Each family received a fishing combo thanks to all the great sponsors.

First Of Four Bike And Fish Classes Was Held This Past Week

Mark Moran, Learn 2 Fish With Us board member, held a Bike and Fish class for youth from St. John’s Lutheran School along with community kids.    The day started out with the youth biking through Lake Delaware State Park in Ohio.  Once the youth got to the pond, they learned about fishing and then fished, where they caught fish.  Each youth received a rigged fishing combo, tackle box and fishing educational book thanks to Learn 2 Fish With Us.    Four Bike and Fish classes will be held through the summer.

South Park 8th Graders Fish With Captain Greg And Crew!!

It was the hottest day so far in 2023, and so was the fishing for the eighth graders of South Park Middle School of Oshkosh.  Eighth graders went fishing with Captain Greg and volunteers of Learn 2 Fish With Us at Menominee Park on May 30th.  Over eighty students, were split into four groups, and attended one of four fishing sessions which lasted an hour and a half.  Captain Greg and crew from Learn 2 Fish With Us shared their passion for fishing by educating them on fishing, and then took them fishing. 

Students learned the skills and equipment need to begin fishing such as; safety while fishing, spin cast and spinning fishing combos, how to cast, different fishing presentations, fish identification, knots, live and artificial bait, aquatic invasive species, keeping a fishing log and so much more.  After each seminar, students went fishing for an hour.  Fishing was awesome and the students caught largemouth bass, bluegill, perch, rock bass and bullheads!!  You should have seen all the smiles!! 

Each student received a NPAA Future Pro shirt thanks to the National Professional Anglers Association and Future Angler Foundation. 

Gusty Winds Doesn’t Keep Oshkosh Fourth Graders From A Day Of Fishing!! 

The day may have been cold with gusty winds, but that did not stop the Oaklawn Elementary fourth graders from going fishing with Captain Greg and volunteers of Learn 2 Fish With Us.  Captain Greg held three fishing sessions for the fourth graders.  Each session started out by educating the students on the skills and equipment needed to begin fishing through our Fishing Basics seminar.  After the Fishing Basics seminar, the fourth graders had the opportunity to fish for just over an hour in each session, where they caught bluegills, bass, perch and bullheads.  Jason Swaney of the Wisconsin DNR, talked with the kids and helped them fish during the final session of the day.  The fishing sessions were held at Menominee Park, which is located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on Wednesday, May 24th.

Oaklawn Elementary Fifth Graders Say ‘Got Another One’!!

It was a beautiful day and the fish were biting!!  Captain Greg and volunteers of Learn 2 Fish With Us hosted a fishing day for the Oaklawn Elementary fifth graders.  The event was held at Menominee Park, which is located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  This event took place on May 23rd.  Over sixty students, were split into three groups which rotated through three stations, which included fishing, sailing and outdoors skills. Captain Greg and crew from Learn 2 Fish With Us shared their passion for fishing by educating them on fishing, and then took them fishing. 

Students learned the skills and equipment need to begin fishing such as; safety while fishing, spin cast and spinning fishing combos, how to cast, different fishing presentations, fish identification, knots, live and artificial bait, aquatic invasive species, keeping a fishing log and so much more.  We were also very lucky to have Jason Higgins DNR warden for Winnebago county and we talked about what he does.  After each seminar, students went fishing for an hour.  Fishing was awesome and the students caught largemouth bass, bluegill, perch, rock bass, bullheads and even golden shiners!!  You should have seen all the smiles as many students caught their first, second and some even their third fish!! 

Captain Greg Introduces Woodland’s Third Graders To Fishing

Captain Greg Karch of Learn 2 Fish With Us held fishing seminars for the third graders of Woodland Elementary on the afternoon of May 19th.  Woodland Elementary is located in Kimberly, Wisconsin.

Ninety-two third graders learned about the equipment and skills needed to begin fishing, through an interactive Fishing Basics seminar.  Fishing Basics taught students; safety while fishing, spin cast and spinning fishing combos, how to cast safely and accurately, knots, fish identification, live and artificial bait, aquatic invasive species, logging fishing trips, conservation and so much more.  After the seminar Captain Greg and the students asked each other questions which was a fun part of the fishing seminar!!  Captain Greg has been hosting his Fishing Basic seminars for Woodland Elementary, for the last ten years.

At the end of the fishing clinic students learned they would receive a NPAA Future Angler shirt and a fishing educational book thanks to the National Professional Anglers Association, Future Angler Foundation and Learn 2 Fish With, and were the third graders excited!!

Beautiful Evening For Oshkosh Scouts To Learn 2 Fish

Captain Greg and volunteers of Learn 2 Fish With Us shared their passion for fishing with over eighty boy, cub and girl scouts of Oshkosh.  The fishing clinic took place the evening of May 18th at Winnebago County Park located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  It was the perfect night to host the fishing clinic as it was sunny and warm and may have been one of the best evenings of 2023. 

 

The evening started out with the scouts learning the skills and equipment needed to begin fishing through Captain Greg’s Fishing Basics seminar.  Fishing Basics teaches; safety while fishing, spin cast and spinning fishing combos, how to cast, different fishing presentations, fish identification, knots, live and artificial bait, aquatic invasive species, keeping a fishing log and so much more.  After the Fishing Basics seminar, scouts walked to the pond which was a catch and release.  Due to this being a catch and release pond, it did not take long for the scouts to start catching fish!!  Scouts caught Largemouth Bass, Bluegill and hybrids.  Captain Greg would love to see more fishing locations that are catch and release to allow youth and families to be able to catch fish!!

Each youth was excited as they received with a fishing combo or mini tackle box with tackle, a Future Pro Shirt and a fishing educational book that to the National Professional Anglers Association and Learn 2 Fish With Us.

Winneconne Third Graders Enjoy Fishing Day!!

On May 3rd, the Winneconne Elementary third graders enjoyed Fishing Day which was hosted by Learn 2 Fish With Us, Future Angler Foundation and the Winneconne High School Fishing Team. 

The day started out with the six third grader classes being split into two groups where each of the groups attended a Fishing Basics seminar which taught the students the skills and equipment needed to begin fishing.  This was hosted by Learn 2 Fish With Us and NPAA member Captain Greg.  Once the seminar was completed, it was time for the youth to attend fishing educational stations and were they excited!! 

Fishing educational stations included; casting safely and accurately, how to tie a Clinch and Palomar knot and fish identification which was hosted by the Winneconne High School Fishing team and Captain Greg.  All you saw where smiles as the students completed a knot or caught a Backyard Bass.  When students were asked ‘What was their favorite station?’.  Students basically were split between all the stations!!

 

Next, Captain Greg asked if they were ready to go fishing in the afternoon and they all yelled ‘YES’!!!!!  The first group of third graders were bused to Marble Park which was located about a mile away from the school.  They then fished for about an hour and fifteen minutes.  Due to the previous days wind and cold made fishing tough.  Perch, bluegill and crappie were caught by a few of the students.  The High School Fishing Team was excited as students asked them to sign their NPAA Future Pro shirt while they were fishing.   The students were sad when the teachers said it was time to go back to school.  Just as quick we had the next group of third graders ready to go fishing!!

 

Captain Greg was impressed at how many parents and grandparents attended the event as chaperons along with the High School Fishing Team.  This was Greg’s most volunteers during his fishing events!!  Once again it was another safe and fun event!!!

West Bend East Adventure Class Experiences Hands On Fishing Activities

On April 25th, Learn 2 Fish With Us volunteers taught hands on fishing skills to the students.  The three stations included; casting safely and accurately, tying different knots that are needed and rigging of a fishing combo.  The students helped rig forty fishing combos for Learn 2 Fish With Us upcoming fishing clinics.

 

Captain Greg Introduces West Bend East Adventure Class To Fishing

 

On April 12th, Captain Greg Karch of Learn 2 Fish With Us, visited West Bend East High School where he taught two Adventure classes the skills and equipment needed to begin fishing.  They learned; safety while fishing, spin cast and spinning fishing combos, how to cast safely and accurately, simple fishing presentations, how to tie the Clinch and Palomar knot, fish identification, live and artificial bait, aquatic invasive species and so much more. 

At the end of the semester, Adventure class students will attend a weekend gateway where they will go camping.  While camping they will utilize the fishing equipment they rigged and the fishing skills they learned.  A big thank you goes out to the National Professional Anglers Association for providing the fishing combos that the school will keep.  Each youth received a fishing goodie thanks to Learn 2 Fish With Us sponsors.
