What An Evening Of Fishing With The Oshkosh Scouts

Captain Greg and volunteers of Learn 2 Fish With Us shared their passion for fishing with over sixty scouts of Oshkosh.  The fishing clinic took place the evening of May 16th at Winnebago County Park located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  It was the perfect night to host the fishing clinic as it was sunny and warm and the rain stayed away.

The evening started out with the scouts learning the skills and equipment needed to begin fishing through Captain Greg’s Fishing Basics seminar.  Fishing Basics teaches; safety while fishing, spin cast and spinning fishing combos, how to cast, different fishing presentations, fish identification, knots, live and artificial bait, aquatic invasive species, keeping a fishing log and so much more.  Angelo, the local Lake Winnebago fish biologist talked to youth about fish tagging along with showing them how it was done and the data they collect.

After the Fishing Basics seminar, scouts walked to the pond which was a catch and release.  Due to this being a catch and release pond, it did not take long for the scouts to start catching fish!!  Scouts caught Largemouth Bass, Bluegill and hybrids.  Captain Greg would love to see more fishing locations that are catch and release to allow youth and families to be able to catch fish!!

Each youth was excited as they received with a fishing combo or mini tackle box with tackle, a Future Pro Shirt and a fishing educational book that to the Future Angler Foundation and Learn 2 Fish With Us.

Westlake Village Youth Excited While Learning 2 Fish

This event planning started when Greg of Westlake Village called Captain Greg and asked for Learn 2 Fish With Us help in organizing Westlake Village first fishing event.  Another important note was that Greg of Westlake Village said, ‘if it was a hit they would make it a annual event’.  When Captain Greg of Learn 2 Fish With Us heard that, he was in and knew they could have a successful event with good marketing.

After months of planning the day finally came and the attendance proved it was a HIT!! hit.  Hoping, forty youth would attend, they had over eighty youth and one hundred and sixty adults.  Both Greg’s were excited!!

The morning started out with Captain Greg presenting his Fishing Basics seminar, which taught attendees the skills and equipment needed to begin fishing.  After Fishing Basics, youth attended hands on educational stations which included casting, knot tying and fish identification.  Youth colored a fish for an art contest and the Illinois DNR brought their fish and wildlife exhibit for all to view.

Once youth attended all stations they received a fishing combo, Future Pro shirt and fishing education book thanks to Future Angler Foundation and Learn 2 Fish With Us sponsors.
