Today Karen and Captain Greg shared their passion for fishing by hosting three Learn 2 Fish With Us Fishing Programs for three Boys & Girls Clubs Greater Milwaukee.
The morning started at the Hayes Club, where youth of all ages learned the skills and equipment needed to begin fishing. Participants were introduced to fishing safety, the different types of fishing rods and reels, basic casting techniques, fishing presentations, knot tying, fish identification, and the importance of protecting our waters through aquatic invasive species prevention.
The next stop was the Kagel Club. Their enthusiasm and willingness to learn made for a great session filled with questions and hands-on learning.
The day concluded at the Milwaukee Academy of Science, where another group of excited young anglers learned the fundamentals of fishing. From learning how to cast to identifying different fish species, the youth were eager to participate and develop new outdoor skills.
Throughout all three programs, the excitement and energy from the youth made for an unforgettable day. Seeing so many young people excited about fishing and spending time outdoors is exactly what Learn 2 Fish With Us is all about.
Later this month, the youth who participated in the Fishing Program will have the opportunity to put their newly learned skills into action during a fishing outing at Washington Park, one of Milwaukee’s Urban Fishing locations. The fishing experience will be hosted by the Washington Park Urban Ecology Center, and to help ensure every participant has the opportunity to fish, Learn 2 Fish With Us donated fully rigged fishing combos to the center. The event will provide youth with a fun, hands-on opportunity to build confidence, enjoy the outdoors, and create lasting memories while fishing.
Each youth received a Learn 2 Fish With Us Youth Certified Angler shirt and a fishing education book that reviews everything they learned during the program—and so much more! These resources will help them continue building their fishing knowledge long after the program ends.
