It may have been hot outside, but the Xavier Summer School students stayed cool while learning about fishing during a Learn 2 Fish With Us Fishing Program hosted in the air-conditioned gym in Appleton, Wisconsin. Youth attending the program ranged in age from just 3 years old up to 10 years old, making it a fun and engaging learning experience for anglers of all skill levels.
During the Fishing Basics seminar, students learned the skills and equipment needed to begin fishing. Topics included fishing safety, how to use both spin-cast and spinning fishing combos, safe and accurate casting techniques, simple fishing presentations, how to tie the Clinch and Palomar knots, the different types of live and artificial bait, how to identify common fish species, and ways to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species.
The program was filled with hands-on learning opportunities as many students worked directly with Captain Greg. They practiced casting, learned how to tie fishing knots, identified fish species, and explored the equipment used by anglers. These interactive activities gave students the confidence to begin fishing while making learning fun and engaging.
Each student received a Learn 2 Fish With Us Youth Certified Angler shirt and a fishing educational book thanks to our generous sponsors and donors.
One of the highlights of the day for Captain Greg was receiving many handmade thank-you cards from the students. Their thoughtful messages and artwork meant a great deal to him and served as a wonderful reminder of the impact that introducing youth to the lifelong sport of fishing can have.
Thank you to the Xavier Summer School staff for inviting Learn 2 Fish With Us to share the lifelong sport of fishing with their students. We hope to see many of these young anglers enjoying Wisconsin’s lakes and rivers with their families this summer!
