Casting in Memory of Rick: Scouts Fishing Program at Winnebago County Park

On Thursday, May 14th, Learn 2 Fish With Us proudly hosted our annual fishing program for the Scouts of Oshkosh at Winnebago County Park. While the evening was filled with excitement, learning, and fish stories, it was also a meaningful day of remembrance.

This year’s program was held in memory of Learn 2 Fish With Us Board Member and longtime volunteer Rick Schwandt, who passed away earlier this year. Rick dedicated countless hours to helping youth discover the joy of fishing and had volunteered at this very event for the past six years. His passion for teaching and encouraging young anglers left a lasting impact on so many scouts and families throughout the community. Although Rick was deeply missed, his spirit and love for the outdoors were felt throughout the evening.

During the program, scouts learned the equipment, techniques, and fishing skills needed to successfully catch fish that evening along the shores of Lake Winnebago. From learning how to rig a rod and reel to understanding bait selection and safe fish handling, the scouts gained hands-on experience that will help build confidence and lifelong outdoor memories.

To help continue their fishing journey, every new scout received a fully rigged fishing combo. Scouts who had attended previous years received a mini tackle box stocked with tackle to expand their fishing equipment collection. In addition, every participant received a fishing educational book to continue learning beyond the event.

We were also honored to have representatives from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources attend the event and bring their shocking boat to demonstrate how fisheries biologists safely survey and tag fish. Scouts had the opportunity to learn firsthand about fish management, conservation efforts, and the important role fish tagging plays in tracking fish populations and maintaining healthy waterways. A special thank you to Angelo for sharing his knowledge and providing such an educational and interactive experience for everyone attending.

Earlier this year, Captain Greg was honored by the Boy Scouts of America as a Master Angler Instructor in recognition of more than 20 years of dedication to introducing scouts to the sport of fishing. The recognition reflects not only a passion for teaching fishing skills, but also a commitment to mentoring youth, building confidence, and creating outdoor experiences that scouts will remember for years to come.

A huge thank you goes out to all the volunteers, leaders, and supporters who helped make this event possible. Most importantly, thank you to the scouts who came ready to learn, fish, and honor the memory of a volunteer who cared deeply about helping youth enjoy the outdoors.

Rick Schwandt’s legacy will continue every time a young angler casts a line with confidence and excitement.
