On Friday, May 15th, several organizations came together to host an all-day fishing program for the third graders of Kiel and New Holstein Elementary Schools at Kiel Fish & Game.

A huge team effort by Learn 2 Fish With Us, Ultimate Angler Showdown, the New Holstein High School Fishing Team, the Kiel High School Fishing Team, and Kiel Fish & Game helped introduce more than 130 third graders to the sport of fishing.

New Holstein Elementary attended the morning session, while Kiel Elementary participated in the afternoon session. Each session kicked off with Captain Greg Karch’s Fishing Basics seminar, where students learned the skills and equipment needed to begin fishing.

After the seminar, the youth were split into three groups and rotated through hands-on educational stations that included:

  • Casting
  • Knot tying
  • Fish identification

Once the educational stations were completed, it was time to hit the water — and the fish were biting! Youth caught bluegill, pumpkinseed, and bass throughout the day. You could hear the excitement from all around the pond as kids screamed with joy when they hooked a fish and smiled proudly while taking pictures with their catch.

Thanks to the generous sponsors of Learn 2 Fish With Us, every youth also received a Youth Certified Angler shirt and a fishing educational book to continue their fishing journey.
